Orchestrated

Branding, Typography Design, Curating
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Glyphs
Client: RMIT School of Design (Graduation Show)

This project involved the branding, communication, and curation of RMIT Communication Design’s mid-year graduation exhibition. The Grad Show is held every semester to celebrate the work and achievements of graduating students, providing a platform to showcase a wide range of creative outcomes.

Titled Orchestration, the theme explored how designers harmonise visual, auditory, and experiential elements to create unified outcomes, much like a conductor shaping multiple instruments into a single symphony. We began with individual concept proposals, followed by collaborative development to refine the exhibition’s identity and experience.

I was part of the architecture and spatial design team, where I focused more on curatorial planning and the physical experience of the exhibition. But I also contributed a key visual element—a typographic sound piece called the Musicbox Alphabet, which transformed the 26 letters into corresponding sounds, adding an interactive and multisensory layer to the show.

SEND YOU A SUNFLOWER

Branding, Illustration, Typography Design, Installation Design
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
Client: everbab

SEND YOU A SUNFLOWER is an International Women's Day event by the brand everbab.

On Women's Day, free flowers and gifts were distributed to women on the streets of Shanghai to celebrate the occasion. In this project, I was responsible for typography design, illustration, and layout. I created a series of posters to depict how women can celebrate their day in various settings.

This series not only celebrates International Women's Day but also addresses social issues faced by women in Chinese society. By highlighting issues such as the significant efforts made by Chinese women to have sanitary pads available on high-speed trains, the persistent gender inequalities in college entrance exam scores, and the stereotype that women are not adventurous, I aimed to call for equal treatment of women on this special day. After completing this project, I am even more convinced that, as a designer, I have a responsibility to voice the concerns of marginalized groups to society.

LONGHUA
TEMPLE FAIR

Illustration, Typography Design
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, 3ds Max
Client:  Shanghai Xuhui District Bureau of Culture and Tourism

The LONGHUA TEMPLE FAIR is a major annual spring event in Shanghai and is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of the city. I designed promotional posters, shops , and various props and decorations for the fair in both 2023 and 2024.

The challenge of this project was that all elements on the poster needed to be turned into physical pieces. For example, the peach blossom pattern had to be made into ground decorations, and the river pattern into a long floor sticker stretching over ten meters. To ensure a unified style, I designed the booths for the first time, overseeing concept design, 3D modeling, and determining dimensions, materials, and colors. I also designed other event decorations, such as inflatables, and supervised the production of all these items. This project was completed within a very limited time and budget.

Starting in 2023, we introduced 3D modeling to standardize the production of lanterns after the design phase. This has added the task of supervising the 3D modeling process to my responsibilities. However, I am pleased to gain insights into the workflows of other designers.

3D Modelling, 3D Printing,  Graphic Design, Laser cutting
Fusion 360, ZBrush, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
Client: Brunswick Tool Library

A self learning project to serve the local community.

Brunswick Tool Library

The Brunswick Tool Library is a volunteer-run, membership-funded community organisation in Brunswick, Victoria, Australia.

My responsibilities here include working as a librarian and an assistant for the repair café. In my spare time, I use my professional expertise to repair tools and enhance the experience for both staff and customers, including:
  • Building and printing 3D models to fix tools in the library.
  • Using laser cutting to create name tags and movable signs enhances the volunteers' work experience.
  • Creating signage and instructions for customers.

FoodBank Victoria

Foodbank Victoria is a leading hunger relief charity in Victoria, Australia, providing essential food and groceries to individuals and families in need. They work with a network of community organizations and partners to fight food insecurity and ensure access to nutritious meals.

As a volunteer, I started working in the Rework department in April 2024, striving to help more people in need. At the same time, I wanted to show appreciation to the staff, so I taught myself 3D modeling to create figurines based on Foodbank-themed illustrations.

The Revival of Xiaoxiaochang

Visual Design, Design Management
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate
Client: Yuyuan Creativity Lab & Commercial Properties

Xiaoxiaochang New Year Pictures are synonymous with Shanghai's New Year prints. These pictures vividly document the colorful lives and customs of Shanghai after its opening to foreign trade, reflecting a society where East meets West and old blends with new.

In this project, I redesigned the New Year Pictures to bring the local culture of 20th-century Shanghai back to the public eye. Considering the scenes depicted in the prints, which show the transition between old and new Shanghai, I combined traditional Chinese colored lanterns with LED light strips in my production process.

POP MART-
The YU GARDEN LANTERN FESTIVAL

Visual Design, Design Management
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Client: POP MART

The Yuyuan Lantern Festival is one of Shanghai's most grandiose Chinese New Year events, attracting millions of visitors over its month-long duration. From 2020 to 2023, I served as the design manager for the lantern team. My responsibilities spanned from initial design to coordination, production, supervision, and installation, ensuring the completion and display of the works. During the festival, I participated as an instructor, teaching lantern design courses to children aged 5-12.

SHEDE-
The YU GARDEN LANTERN FESTIVAL

Visual Design, Design Management
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
Client: SHEDE Spirits

During the Chinese New Year, the high visitor traffic makes the Yuyuan Lantern Festival an ideal location for brand advertisements. However, traditional lantern designers have struggled to meet contemporary aesthetic demands. Since joining the team in 2020, I have progressively replaced traditional designers in the design phase. I am responsible for creating lantern designs for two core areas (primarily for public entertainment) and crafting custom lantern designs for various brands.

The Yuyuan Lantern Festival covers a large area with a diverse array of lantern positions. Some hang on walls or between buildings, some are placed on the ground, and others float on water, each featuring unique design themes. These different positions and themes offer the brand many options, but also pose significant challenges for integrating brand advertisements into the lantern designs.

Typically, before designing, one or two meetings with the brand are necessary to discuss their requirements and the styles and themes of already designed lanterns at the site. Then comes continuous designing and revisions. Brands generally share a consistent demand—to prominently display their products or logos. However, at a festival like this, the brand advertisement should ideally take a secondary role to avoid compromising the audience's experience.

As a designer, I strive to propose solutions that don't detract from the audience's enjoyment while meeting the brand's needs as much as possible. The advertising of Shede wine is a good example, where the wine bottle fits naturally into the floral theme inspired by the Shanhaijing, seamlessly integrating into the display.
